  • SPRING MEETING
    Thursday 12 May, 4pm at Queen Elizabeth High School, Johnstown, Carmarthen:
    Join us in the new Library at QEHS, where the topic under discussion will be READING GROUPS - setting them up and keeping them going! Top tips and tried and tested activities to share.
    Please contact Linda if you're able to attend.
    Parking details: Drivers will go on the main Llanstephan Road past the entrance and then the exit for the bus bay with the entrance for the car park being the third road. From the car park they can walk down to the reception area.

  • SLA WEEKEND COURSE
    The 2009 SLA Weekend Course is entitled "Take your Partners: School Libraries Building Bridges" and will take place at the University of Surrey, Guildford, from 19-21 June.
    The programme and booking form are available online on the SLA website.

  • SUMMER MEETING AND AGM
    Wed 18 June, 3.30 p.m.

    TOPIC: Bridging the Gap for KS4 and KS5 Students
    A workshop looking at planning induction sessions. Our brief AGM followed the workshop. Thanks to Carmarthen Library for agreeing to host our meeting in their recently refurbished library.

  • BRANCH COURSE
    Our 2008 course was held on Thursday 3 July 2008 at Haverfordwest Library, Pembrokeshire, SA61 1SU, from 9.00am (for 9.30am) till 4.30pm.

    TITLE: Everybody Read! Creating the Inspiring School Library
    Cost: £50 including VAT and refreshments and buffet lunch
    What's Hot? - All participants were asked to bring with them details of books, magazines, comics, websites etc that are hot at their school right now!


    Course Leader: Jerry Hurst, former Head of Children's Services in several London boroughs, and now freelance trainer and consultant on reading and library-related themes.

  • 2008 SLA WEEKEND COURSE
    The 2008 SLA Weekend Course, School Libraries: Leading Learning, took at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, from Friday 13 - Sunday 15 June 2008. Full details can be found on the SLA website.

Our guest speaker was Gareth Mills (Change Manager, Education & Lifelong Learning, Pembrokeshire County Council), who gave a presentation on Changes to the 14-19 Curriculum and Education and then threw the discussion open to the floor to consider the implications for school libraries.

Branch AGM and Afternoon Course. We were very pleased to welcome Geoff Dubber back to West Wales. In “Balancing the Books! Money Matters in the Secondary School LRC ”, Geoff examined with us the stages in the budgeting process and provided many practical approaches to budget management.

Clare Wherrett from Heinemann/Raintree displayed the latest resources over lunch and break, taking orders on the spot and leaving us with a catalogue to browse at our leisure.

Members were invited to join the SE Branch at Willows High School, Cardiff, for a course with Lynn Latowsky, Learning Resources Manager at Wadebridge School, Cornwall, who looked at Library Management and Professional Development issues, and author Aidan Chambers, who talked about his interesting and varied life and how it has informed his writing, giving those present a sneak insight into his forthcoming novel This Is All: The Pillow Book of Cordelia Kenn, due out on 1st September.

The afternoon began with tea/coffee and biscuits at 2.00 p.m., followed afterwards by our short AGM, where new Officers and Committee were announced.

Following the AGM, there was an opportunity to browse displays provided by representatives from Usborne Books, Hodder/Wayland and Heinemann, and to purchase resources.
